Divorce 2010 - Families of the Future

Divorce 2010 - Families of the Future

by Carol Cavanaugh

These days divorce is a common phenomenon. Everyone knows someone who is divorced. Married couples may decide they want to end their marriage, so they may have to decide to separate from each other. They will be able to re-marry someone else if they choose to do so since their first marriage is no longer valid.

Divorce can occur for many reasons. It is a modern social trend good or bad. It is a serious decision for a married couple to do. It affects not only their relationship, but also affects their family's relationships. Married couples may also be mothers and fathers who have children together. These children may be profoundly affected by the decision of their parents.

It may still be considered taboo among some cultures and religions today. However, most societies accepts this choice since it's increasingly common. Instead, most societies offer moral and financial support and counseling to all of the people affected.

Divorce in 2010 makes it very attractive for nuclear and extended families. Many young kids grow up with single parents, stepparents, stepsisters or stepbrothers, half-sisters or half-brothers, Mom's new boyfriend or Dad's new girlfriend, or both at once if both parents are dating new mates at the same time. Or a combination of all mentioned above. There are many variations and infinite possibilities available. Young children may very well deal with complex relationships from a very early age. They would be challenging issues to deal with for any adult. The 21st century family is indeed a social science that is most interesting.

It also makes it a very interesting time for defining marriage as a form of legal binding agreement. In the past, all you used to need for a marriage to take place was a marriage license, and a priest or judge. Considered fashionable even and since it's such a common practice today, pre-nuptials or "pre-nups" are a very popular addition to marriages. Pre-nups generally state who gets what if a married couple should happen to separate. They may even become as detailed and complex as to set rules on how a couple must behave toward each other.

Think about this exam. How many divorced couple do you know? Consider your aunts, uncles, cousins, siblings, grandparents, parents and friends. Your colleagues, bosses, teachers, students or employees. Your Neighbors and your roommates. Your favorite celebrity, politician, author, musician. I personally can name one in almost every category listed above except one. I tried this test to a friend, and I think I can name one from each categories above.

Society today may consider marriage differently as well. Why still continue being married if they do not seem to work? Should someone be careful about not getting a pre-nup before marriage? How would you approach being asked to sign a pre-nup? Maybe you like the idea of pre-nuptial agreements. It is a very popular and relevant 2010 topic indeed. It currently presents various social trends and reminds us directly of modern eras.
